Santorini and Naxos

Santorini is one of the most stunning of the Greek islands, instantly recognizable around the world. It has something for everyone: multi-coloured cliffs that soar out of a sea-drowned caldera, drifts of whitewashed buildings, dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches. It’s hardly surprising the island is one of the most popular destinations in Greece.
Then discover Naxos, the largest of the Cyclades Islands. It was a cultural centre of Classical Greece and Byzantium, and Venetian and Frankish influences -- all left their marks. Its high mountains form rain clouds and, consequently, Naxos is more fertile and green than most of the other Cyclades islands. It produces olives, grapes, figs, citrus fruit, corn and potatoes. Mount Zeus (also known as Mount Zas; 1,004m) is the Cyclades' highest peak and is the central focus of the island's mountainous interior.
On Naxos, explore the highest mountain of the area: Zas. From its summit enjoy breath-taking views of olive-orchards around you that are in sharp contrast with the deep blue Aegean Sea. Its main city has a gorgeous waterfront and a web of steep cobbled alleys below its hilltop. You needn’t travel far to find isolated beaches, distinctive mountain villages and ancient sites.
And what better way to discover this unique landscape than on foot?
